Being held captive by my kids...
CRAVING adult contact...
This topic is getting a lot of attention and I have a lot to say about it...
At the first thought of this, I was uncomfortable for the same reasons as everyone else... As a parent I understand the fear of my daughters having to share a bathroom at the same time as 'men'. This seems to be the only scenario getting attention lately, but, there is also fear of the accusations to come of my sons or husband in a bathroom with girls/women. Before I go any further I will tell you, I am a Christian. I believe in God and Jesus. The death and the resurrection. I read the Bible. As a Christian I feel stereotyped. That because I believe in God and the Bible that I mustn't like transgender people (amoung a plethora of other things). That I must fear them or hate them. This is simply not true. This might be a bit of a surprise for those of you that aren't Christians, and maybe to some of you who are, being a Christian means loving and accepting people, all people, as Jesus did. (This is the part where most would quote scripture. I'm not going to do that. If you don't believe me, or want to disprove this statement, go read a Bible. I suggest starting with a NCV or NIV). No one is excluded from Jesus' love. This fact is so important for me as a Christian, for the way I live my life and how I raise my family. I feel like God has called us to be lovers. And we seem to be forgetting one very important detail, nothing surprises The Lord. He has created everything. He knows everything. This 'issue' is not new to Him. You don't have to agree with everything other people do. And others don't have to agree with everything you (or I) do. But we need to accept and love one another. No matter what. Plain and simple. It's starting to feel like a lot of hate is being thrown at the transgender community. I know this 'hate' is coming from a place of fear. Change is uncomfortable and people fear what they do not understand. I don't think the fear is so much as sharing the washroom with a transgender person, the fear is of the concept being abused by those who are not, in fact, transgender. Subsequently, and rather unfortunately, this fear is translating into hate and is being directed at a group that doesn't even deserve it. That, I am quite certain, didn't ask for it. This makes me sad. My hope is that once the initial shock subsides, this 'hate' won't be felt as much. The world is changing, and if this means we have to have transgender washrooms then so be it. Having transgender washrooms is not going to eliminate the 'boys only' or 'girls only' rooms, and, guess what, you can choose to not use a transgender washroom. On a more personal level (yes, it gets even MORE personal) I have to be honest. This is ridiculous! Is it not? I feel like having transgender washrooms should not even be an issue. It's like we're going back in time to when there was 'black washrooms ' and 'white washrooms'!! Transgenders are getting the horrible label of 'pervert'. This is so upsetting and awful! We need to get something straight, transgender people are just people that want what everyone wants, to be accepted for who we are. Once a man or woman has transitioned, can you honestly tell when you're in a stall next to them? Washing your hands next to them? No, not likely. Many men and women have probably all ready been in a public bathroom at the same time as a transgender person, you just never noticed. There is talk of adding these washrooms to schools so all kids feel comfortable. Do you really think that will make a difference? So few children feel comfortable enough with themselves to make such a bold statement that they won't use the 'trans specific' bathroom anyway, even if it were an emergency. They will feel it will make a statement that they either aren't ready to make or that simply isn't true! And this opens a whole new bottle of insecurities... I just don't feel this is something we should even be putting on our children. They are not emotionally or mentally ready for it at such young ages. Now. If you want to make everyone comfortable and feel included in the washroom, I have a solution. Eliminate stalls. Make all public washrooms the same. One toilet, one sink and one locking door. Don't have 'boy' or 'girl' on the door, just have 'washroom'. Problem solved.
